If Looks Could Kill 01 If Looks Could Kill 02

From the beautiful mind of James Cullen Bressack comes the latest thriller, If Looks Could Kill. This film is about a cop who falls for a beautiful blonde only to find out she is completely psycho. That might be the quick version, but that hook alone makes you want to watch it and possibly imagine that you’re dating me. Cute but straight up psycho.

A new rookie beat cop, Faith (Stephanie Estes), joins the force in her hometown, working alongside detective Paul (Tomek Kosalka), her best friend from childhood. During their first official after work hang out, a beautiful blonde woman, Jessica (Summer Spiro), gets assaulted at the bar. This is where Jessica and Paul meet; it is clearly some form of love at first sight. However, as we learn, Jessica can make anyone fall in love with her. As the story progresses, Faith becomes more and more suspicious of her as she slowly steals Paul away. From a sudden pregnancy to a shotgun marriage (without the shotgun), Jessica takes over. You see her use her beauty and her fake emotions to sway his opinion and turn him against Faith. Things turn dark quite quickly as Jessica begins to go from perfect girl to straight maniac.

I have to say at first: I was put off by Jessica. She seems like the helpless blonde girl trope that just needs a big man to save her. However, when we see her decent into madness as she wraps Paul around her little finger, you see how complex she is. She claims she is insane because she was a product of her environment, but at this point what is true and what is false. Maybe she was abused when she was young, maybe she is just a sociopath. That mystery makes her that much more appealing. Summer Spiro has the crazy eyes down to a tee. She is deadly and plays the character as such.

Also, SPOILER!!, it is implied heavily that she killed Paul’s cat. That is not cool. Shoot anyone you want, but the cat did nothing to you!

The movie itself is, while not a new story, told with such a fierce determination that it will make you question every blonde girl you meet at a bar. Does she need rescuing or are you going to need saving? The only really cinematography I did not enjoy are the angled shots that look up at characters through a frying pan, through dirt, through a keyboard. There is no need for them and they add nothing to story. They look weird and out of place. Especially the keyboard, watching Stephanie Estes type on glass just looks off. However, if this barely 30 seconds of filming is the only thing wrong with the overall image of the film, that ain’t bad at all.

If Looks Could Kill is worth a watch. Even if at no point during the whole film did the song “If Looks Could Kill” by Heart played. One last thing: even though Faith’s dad is not a character in the movie, he has plenty of terrible wisdom that I want to start quoting in my day to day life, such as, “Treat a pregnant woman the way you treat a serial killer, that way you are always pleasantly surprised.”

Staff Reviewer - Canada
Ali Chappell grew up in a wholesome Canadian family that embraced her love of horror at a young age, which allowed her to become desensitized towards its violent nature. She has a several degrees, including business, a triple threat theater degree and is currently working on her third in the field of archaeology. On top of being a writer and an avid horror fan, she is also a yoga teacher, archer, tarot card reader, in the midst of planning her first heist and still enjoys the bright life of being a struggling actress. When she isn't traveling the globe, she is usually found hiding in a movie theater hating the world and everyone in it. However, she is also very optimistic and cheerful and hopes one day Joe Dante will notice her (so she can stop obsessing over him, it's getting kind of weird).
