Review:
Technology is increasingly fascinating and horrifying. With the rapid advancements we’ve all experienced in our lifetimes, the possibilities seem endless as to may lie ahead. Access to virtual reality and the ability to experience a situation or event as though we were there ourselves may be just a jumping off point to how our minds may interact computers and technology. Imagine being given access another human being, your mind inside theirs, controlling their actions. Now imagine this being non-consenting, their body and brain used as an instrument in whatever you need. This is the crux of Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor Uncut.
Tasya Vos is an elite assassin, a processor to be specific. Unlike your run-of-the-mill hitman, her role as a processor means her consciousness is implanted into the body of another person for her to control and carry out assassinations. After her most recent kill, inhabiting the body of a woman to brutally murder a wealthy attorney, she disconnects and it’s on to her next mission. Hired by a man named Reid, this time she must control the mind of Colin Tate, boyfriend to Ava, the daughter of a owerful tech executive. Tas must kill Ava and her brother John, as their deaths will leave the company in his control. When something goes wrong and Tas is unable to disconnect from Colin, what unfolds is a struggle between the two minds in one body.
Son of horror legend David Cronenberg, Brandon Cronenberg follows in his father’s brutal and gory body horror footsteps. Along with the futuristic theme of mind control, Processor delivers its story through ultra-violence and the misuse of technology. While the brutality can be a turn off for even the least squeamish fans out there, from start to finish I never had a chance to catch my breath. The unique premise of being trapped inside your own body with another consciousness that means to murder you (as their only means of escape) is one that I have never experienced as a horror lover. This coupled with stellar acting and visual effects, Possessor Uncut is a driving force for the genre.
Possessor Uncut is a breath of fresh air for horror in 2020. When this season is usually jam-packed with theatrical releases, Brandon Cronenberg fills the void of what is usually a flooded, bloody time of year. If you’re someone who wonders what would happen if Inception was a gorefest instead of a mind heist film, Possessor Uncut is a must see for you.
