Review:
When a bullied kid lashes out against his bully, he’s sent to a reform camp where he unwillingly releases a violent girl, Moira, to do his bidding.
The plot for Some Kind of Hate is somewhat misleading where the main character, Lincoln (Ronen Rubinstein), doesn’t actually want Moira (Sierra McCormick) to hurt the people that have hurt him. This is somewhat of a revenge flick, but with a little bit of a twist, and when the supernatural aspect is thrown into the mix, things get a bit more convoluted. I’m not sure if the screenwriters knew exactly what the movie should be.
Luckily though, the movie is pretty decent. These types of storylines are chugged out year after year and only a few of them have balls and even fewer of them are actually worth watching. What makes Some Kind of Hate work is the acting. While not Oscar contenders, the cast is stronger than expected given the fact the two lead actors (Rubinstein and Phipps) have only been around for a handful of years. Besides the cast, the violence is high on the brutality scale both in the visual aspect and the twisted things Moira does to people.
Here’s where things get a tad confusing, and a bit spoilery, so skip the following paragraph if you want.
What is Moira exactly? We’re lead to believe she is some sort of Candyman-esqe type person who comes when she is beckoned. Ok, that’s fine, but where does she come from? Is she a ghost, or a demon? The obvious answer would be that she is a “vengeful spirit”, but that idea gets thrown out of the window during the last couple of minutes where she can be mortally wounded, and probably even killed. Besides the questionable origins or Moira, she strays from the revenge path quite drastically, making her motives a bit unclear.
END SPOILER
The last questionable bit deals with Lincoln himself, who does not look like someone that would be bullied, not in the least bit. There is nothing about him that would be called awkward, nerdy, or even weird. Maybe he is a secret D&D player or something, who knows. If anything, the asshole bullying him in the beginning of the movie seems more like the type to get picked on. It should also be noted that Lincoln is much larger than all of his aggressors (and seems to be in good shape), and would most certainly deter 99% of the schoolyard bullies.
Though Some Kind of Hate is original in the sense of the killer and how she operates, it could have been nailed down a little tighter. While it may be stereotypical, it would have been more believable to have Lincoln look bully-able. Still, I would easily recommend this to someone who enjoys a revenge-style horror movie.
Video and Audio:
The picture is nice and sharp, with a bit of grain probably purposely added in. The soundtrack playing in the background for a majority of the run time is also nice. No complaints here
