Review:
Based on a true story, The Fields is a Gothic suspense movie set in 1973. It centers around a boy named Steven who lives at his grandparent's farm while his parents try to save their marriage. Weird occurrences begin to happen, which Steven suspects may be linked with some Manson Family hippies who are staying nearby.
This movie is more suspense than horror, unfortunately that hurts it more than it helps. The majority of the movie is long, drawn-out suspense scenes punctuated by cheap scares. The viewers are introduced to plot points that are dropped as quickly as they are introduced. Scenes such Steven's mother being molested by her father or his father's past with his borderline insane family. These scenes have no connection to the film and come off as filler.
The ending is abrupt with nothing properly explained. I left the film completely confused and wondered exactly what the filmmakers were trying to convey to the audience.
The movie stars Tara Reid and Cloris Leachman. Leachman is hysterical playing the very familiar role of the foul-mouthed grandmother of Steven. Her scenes are a bright spot in an otherwise dim movie. Despite being one of the top billed actors, Tara Reid's part is surprisingly small. It's actually a shame, she did better than I expected and I wished I could have seen more of her.
Despite the bright spots, this movie was the longest 98 minutes of my life. It's slow paced, confusing, and very boring. Definitely one to avoid the next time you find yourself perusing the DVD shelves.
