After the success of Hill House Comics, Joe Hill's horror imprint under DC Black Label, I was wondering what other spooky stories the publisher might have up its sleeve. There's The Nice House on the Lake, debuting in June from James Tynion IV, Alvaro Martinez Bueno, and Jordie Bellaire, but that will soon have company as DC has announced DC Horror, a new 17+ imprint from DC and Warner Bros. Consumer Products. It's launching with The Conjuring: The Lover, a prelude to the next installment in The Conjuring film series, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

The Conjuring: The Lover is a five-part mini-series written by screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Rex Ogle and illustrated by Garry Brown. It features a main cover by Bill Sienkiewicz, a variant cover by Ryan Brown, and a 1-in-25 “ratio” variant cover by Garry Brown.

The comic expands upon Jessica's story as the college freshman returns to campus after winter break, full of anxieties from last semester's poor grades, the awkwardness of facing a boy she wishes she never slept with, and the unnerving feeling that she's being watched. Jessica soon realizes the target of something evil. This force will not rest until she's in its unholy grip. Why does it have its sights set on this seemingly normal college freshmen?

The Conjuring: The Lover will also feature backup stories that further explore the mysteries of the items in Ed and Lorraine Warren's dreaded artifact room. The first issue's backup is written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Denys Cowan, while the second is from writer Che Grayson and artist Juan Ferreyra.

“From early titles like House of Mystery and House of Secrets to current series featuring Swamp Thing and John Constantine: Hellblazer, DC has always been the home of great horror comics and characters,” said Marie Javins, DC editor-in-chief. “DC Horror continues this tradition with new frightening tales from both well-known and new storytellers that will keep fans spooked and entertained.”

The Conjuring: The Lover is set to debut in June 2021 with more DC Horror titles coming in October. Since I just watched The Conjuring, I'm very much looking forward to this series, not to mention the others that will fall under the DC Horror imprint. I'm curious if they will be original series or more movie tie-ins.
