Dark Horse Comics made some big news prior to San Diego Comic Con this year when it announced the launch titles of Karen Berger's new imprint. The publisher and Berger Books have shared the below sneak peek at the first issue of the upcoming series, Hungry Ghosts.

Hungry Ghosts is an anthology series written by Anthony Bourdain (yes, the chef from TV) and Joel Rose. Each issue will feature tales of terror, irritable spirits, and horribly strange beings in interconnected tales steeped in Japanese legend. The first issue features artwork from Alberto Ponticelli and Vanesa Del Ray with colors by Jose Villarrubia. The cover is drawn by Paul Pope. Future issues will include artwork from Francesco Francavilla, Leonardo Manco, Paul Pope, Mateus Santolouco, and more.

Inspired by the Japanese Edo Period game Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai or 100 Candles, played by samurai warriors to test their courage, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic game of dread and teror as a circle of international chefs invoke modern tales of horror, terrifying yokai, yorei, and obake, all with the common thread of food. This sounds like the perfect companion to Wayward by Jim Zub and Steven Cummings. The first issue – or course – has a ramen chef refusing to help a beggar and a band of pirates getting more – or less-- than what they were bargaining for after an encounter with a drowning woman turns ghastly.

Hungry Ghosts #1 is set for release on January 31st, 2018.
