New RoboCop Comic Continues From Original Film

I haven't seen the RoboCop remake so I can't comment on it.  It looked cool enough, but the original 1987 film holds a special place in my heart.  BOOM! Studios has announced that they feel the same way as they're releasing a new ongoing RoboCop comic set in the same world as the old flick.  Written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Carlos Magno, the funny book aims to capture all the crime and corruption that New Detroit has to offer.

“Joshua and Carlos are joining forces to bring us the RoboCop we love,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “These guys are both such wonderful creators and I can tell you the first issue of this series had our bullpen doing backflips in excitement. We pick up right where the first movie leaves off, set in the dark, corrupt, complex world of Robocop—a world that’s rife with so many storytelling possibilities. Fans of the original film should consider picking this up a Prime Directive.”

The new comic ignores the two sequels, which is probably a good thing considering the third one had RoboCop flying at one point which was just weird.  It picks up with the criminal Killian released from jail.  He was sent to prison before RoboCop landed on the scene, but now he has his sights set on the biggest baddest cop in the city.  When OCP wants to take guns off the street, Killian sees it as the perfect opportunity to take on the former Alex Murphy.

Joshua Williamson is killing it right now between Ghosted and Nailbiter so I'm ready to check out just about anything he writes.  Carlos Magno had some stellar work on Planet of the Apes.  I'm curious as to how he will handle a big cyborg.  Regardless, I'm pumped for this new series.

The first issue of RoboCop is set to arrive on July 2nd and retail for $3.99.  It will feature a main cover by Goñi Montes and incentive covers from Carlos Magno and Alexis Ziritt.
