NYCC 2016: DARK HORSE COMICS ADAPTS NEIL GAIMAN'S AMERICAN GODS

Dark Horse Comics has been knocking it out of the park lately with some great adaptations, especially from Neil Gaiman.  The recent Troll Bridge is a great example.  The publisher has announced the next in novel from Gaiman's work to receive the comic book treatment: American Gods.  Already on its way to the small screen in the spring, American Gods was first published in 2001.  If you haven't read it yet, you are missing out on a fantastic read.

The novel will be adapted by P. Craig Russell who is no stranger to Gaiman's work having previously adapted Coraline and The Graveyard Book.  He'll be co-writing the comic series with Scott Hampton providing art.  Glenn Fabry and Adam Brown are providing cover art with David Mack creating variant covers for the first issue.  Guest interior art will include work from Walt Simonson, Mark Buckingham, Colleen Doran, P. Craig Russell, and more.

The plan is for 27 single issues totalling three story arcs: Shadows, My Ainsel, and The Moment of the Storm.  Each arc will be collected into a hardcover graphic novel.  Here's the description of American Gods: Shadows from Dark Horse:

American Gods: Shadows #1 finds Shadow Moon released from jail only to discover his wife has died. Broken and uncertain about his future, Shadow Moon meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, who employs him to serve as his bodyguard. This fateful decision thrusts Shadow into a deadly supernatural world where ghosts of the past come back from the dead, and a brewing war between old and new gods hits a boiling point.

“There’s a tremendous amount of excitement, in my house and in the world, about the American Gods TV series coming up on Starz.” said Gaiman. “What we’ve managed to keep a secret until now is that there is something just as exciting out there: American Gods, the comic. I’ve been watching P. Craig Russell breaking down the book into comic form, watching Scott Hampton painting the pages, watching Glenn Fabry create the covers, and grinning to myself with delight, because the American Gods comic is going to be an astonishing, faithful, and beautiful adaptation.”

American Gods: Shadows #1 is set for release on March 15th, 2017.
