Although I write about horror comics here and love the genre, one of my favorite titles on the stands right now is Giant Days from BOOM! Studios. Written by John Allison, it's a fun book about three college girls and the wacky antics they get into. This is why my ears perk up when I hear about any news involving Allison, which is exactly what happened with BOOM! announced By Night, coming in June. The twelve-issue series is illustrated by Christine Larsen and deals with coming home, discovering identity, and accidentally smashing a hole into another dimension.

By Night follows Jane, an aspiring documentarian / actual chemistry major as she's reunited with her former best friend, Heather, an amateur urban explorer. The pair visit an abandoned industrial building which leads them to another world. This is where a plan is born. They can create a documentary about this world and become filthy, stinking rich. The other side of the portal is filled with monsters, magic, and a chance at a whole new life.

By Night combines my love of Fringe, The X-Files, Jon Ronson documentaries and long reads about the collapse of post-Industrial western society,” said writer John Allison. “It’s about going home after college and seeing your home town, and your old friends, through opened eyes. I should also add that it will contain plenty of jokes, dads, mild peril and ludicrous beasts that will almost certainly obscure any lofty intellectual ambitions I might have. And I’m so excited to be working with Christine Larsen on the book, a true star with pencil and pen. Readers are going to love her art.”

“John has written a story with everything I like: interesting female protagonists, strange creatures, urban decay, and sharp humor,” artist Christine Larsen. “I’m psyched to be on this adventure with him, and hope readers will feel the same.”

By Night #1 will feature a main cover by Christine Larsen and a variant cover by John Allison. It's set for release on June 13th, 2018.
