The Dolls Island

Studio: RedUmbrella Games
Platform: PC, Consoles, VR, Mobile
Release date: Coming soon (PC, consoles, VR). TBC (mobile).

The Dolls Island is a horror game in development by RedUmbrella Games, based on the real-life location of The Island of the Dolls, an island just south of Mexico City. In this game, a man goes in search of his wife and becomes entangled in the mystery of this tainted place.

Other than the trailer above, not much is yet known about The Dolls Island, but I do know that players will control the husband in search of his wife. However, the deeper he gets into the mysterious Island of the Dolls, the more he learns about the location’s dreadful secrets.

Players will be solving puzzles, fleeing terror – although of what I’m not yet sure – and searching for something to defend themselves with. The premise itself sounds interesting enough, and god knows that dolls are creepy, especially given that the location is actually a real place.

To the south of Mexico City, hidden between the canals of Xochimilco, is an island known as Isla de las Munecas (Island of the Dolls) with a strange background. It is said that Don Julian Santana Barrera, this island’s caretaker, once found a little girl who had drowned. Before long, he also saw a doll floating down the same canal.

As a sign of respect, he hung the doll on a tree. Then – as though led by spirits, the locals said – the caretaker continued to hang dolls on trees for the next 50 years. But wait, because it gets weirder… In 2001, he was found dead. He had drowned in almost the exact same spot where he’d found the little girl 50 years before. To this day, the island has become a bit of a haunted tourist destination. Visitors are drawn there by the dolls, which Julian had believed contained the souls of many other dead girls, and the tradition continues as new dolls are hung around the island to this day.

It’s certainly the perfect setting for a horror game, and I’m looking forward to hearing more about the game as the studio continues development. I even have a new travel destination to add to my list, which is always nice.

The Dolls Island is releasing in October 2019 and will be playable on PC first, followed by consoles and VR, with a potential release on mobile in the future, too.
