The Sinking City calls upon Cthulhu

Studio: Frogwares

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: March 2019

Cthulhu is so hot right now. And I’m not just talking about the tentacles. A number of Lovecraftian games have been surfacing from the depths lately, and the latest to grab my attention from within the murkiness is Frogwares’ open-world horror, The Sinking City. The game’s release date is planned for March 2019, and here’s what we know so far...

The Sinking City takes places in the fictional open-world city of Oakmont Massuchusetts, New England, inspired by the imaginings of H.P. Lovecraft. Think of the city as a rundown, flooded, gothic Venice and you kind of get the idea.

All you need to know is that it looks like the perfect setting for a 1920s private investigator to delve into the mystery of a sinking city, aiming to reveal its secrets before his own mind unravels. After all, “we live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.” — H.P. Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories. Kind of makes you want to go mad already, doesn’t it?

After watching the gameplay video from E3, I’m feeling hyped. You travel from one section of the city to another via an old boat and paddle, talking to ill-fated inhabitants of the city, finding out more about the misfortunes that have befallen them, and fighting off nightmarish creatures – one of which is eerily like the unforgettable parasite from The Thing, all limbs and hands as it skitters towards you. Nothing that your trusty revolver and shotgun can’t handle, though...

And who knows what manner of other weapons, tools, and creatures will be revealed when the studio is ready to share more about The Sinking City in August? Until then, watch the gameplay video below and let me know if it makes you feel equally as excited.

The Sinking City is expected to swim onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in March of 2019, and I’ll be waiting to share more information with you next month. You’ll also be able to keep up with everything about this Lovecraftian nightmare by checking their website, Twitter, and Facebook.
