There are some incredibly strong female characters in comics.  There is no denying that.  Unfortunately, there is no denying that there's a lot of cheesecake out there that's pure fan service for the heterosexual male reader.  Dynamite Entertainment has been publishing a mixture of the two for a bit with characters like Vampirella and Red Sonja.  Here you had engaging female heroines, leaping into battle wearing little more than some shoelaces and Post-It Notes.  This was  my biggest problem with reading these books as it just didn't seem practical.  Why would Vampirella go out hunting monsters wearing a string bikini?  Doesn't make sense, right?  Fortunately, the publisher has announced that in early 2016 Vampirella, Red Sonja, and Dejah Thoris will be getting a redesign and a relaunch with all new series.

This relaunch follows the narrative direction of writer Gail Simone, who just wrapped up the mega crossover event Swords of Sorrow, providing a road map that will serve as the basis of the new series.  Red Sonja will debut in January from writer Marguerite Bennett and artist Aneke.  Vampirella and Dejah Thoris will follow written by Kate Leth and Frank J. Barbiere respectively.

"We're doing a monster makeover with these characters, and it's a joy to be part of this. Make no mistake, these are characters we love, badasses all; the She-Devil with a Sword, the queen of all vampire hunters, and the warlord princess. Characters do not get any better than that," says Simone. "Our mission here is to spruce up their look and remind people that these were the original female ass-kickers that inspired Xena, Buffy, and Leia Organa. They are the map others followed, and we get to bring them each a hot, new look from brilliant artist/designer Nicola Scott, as well as thrilling new mission statements for each of them."

Artist Nicola Scott designed the new look of the characters, blending classic costume elements with modern, action-ready, and most importantly functional designs.  These make total sense given the characters and the types of adventures they get into.  I can't wait to see the direction they're going next and I'm also curious to see fan reaction from people that were so attached to the original bikini outfits.
