Yeah! from AMC Networks is a one-of-a-kind movie experience for your iPad. Sure, like other apps it offers streaming of movie rentals from its digital-quality library, and that's fairly standard, but what's new and exciting is its proprietary "Y! DEF" way of viewing movies. Think of it as Netflix, plus all the bonus features and more you get when you buy a movie. Each movie available in the Y! DEF format includes trivia about the film, interviews with the actors and directors, and even quizzes to keep the viewer engaged. It's a very cool way to watch movies like never before. It's more than just a commentary track or featurette from a Blu-ray. It covers everything from development and production, to score creation, to the most nuanced trivia, and often with a good touch of humor to boot. Yeah! is pop-up video for movies, and it's a must watch for budding film geeks and seasoned pros alike.

For the horror enthusiasts, there's not a huge selection currently, but what's there is the best of the best. Movies like The Shining, Child's Play, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Blair Witch Project, Scream, and more. After watching a few of the selections available, I was pleasantly surprised by the cool trivia tidbits and a few of the background interviews offered. It's not intrusive, with all trivia appearing in the empty space under the movie's frame. You can pick and choose which of the cast and crew interviews strike your fancy as well. More importantly, if you do find it distracting, you can hide the whole thing too. I liked that the interviews and trivia weren't mere rehashing of previous behind-the-scenes features and such, but rather all new material filmed recently and specifically to this version of the movie. They estimate an average of 400-500 curated elements for each film. Even Wes Craven has expressed, "I learned things about my movies even I didn't know."

I had a blast with it, and even let my kids try it out (with gentler fare than those mentioned above of course) and they really loved it and found it easy to use. The hardest part was trying to pick out which movies to watch. The movies are beautiful when viewed on the iPad's retina display. Films like Blade Runner: The Final Cut are better than they've ever been, almost reaching the quality of Blu-ray high definition. Newer movies look stunning, as one would expect. If there is a downside to Yeah!, it's the lack of selection, but the catalog continues to grow, and if you're a movie lover with a special love of the minutiae of filmmaking, this is a must experience for you.
