Agents Shaw and McGregor are trapped in a bizarre warehouse where time and space act differently. It's given them a moment to reflect on what brought them here. They were connecting the dots regarding a serial killer that led to Shaw making some desperate decisions. When they were dealing with such heinous acts of depravity, were the lengths they went justified?

While the horror elements are toned down in A Walk Through Hell #4, the comic is no less chilling. A large portion of the issue is a flashback to the investigation. The killer, Carnahan, has been manipulated a series of horrible people into committing horrible acts. He's handling it well, playing the cops and staying at least a few steps ahead of them. Seeing him in the interrogation room will send a shiver up your spine. He's just way too calm and cavalier about all this.

Artist Goran Sudzuka brings this naïve quality to Carnahan. He's got this “aww shucks” demeanor with these wide eyes. His facial expressions are like a switch. He can flip them on when he needs to turn up the charm. Otherwise, he has a cold look to him, like he's dead inside. This is a true psychopath.

After witnessing this, it's no wonder Shaw and McGregor did what they did. What is that, you may ask? Well, you're going to have to read the book to find out. Suffice it to say, they crossed a line...probably more than one. Once they discover...well, it's not a body per se. It's more of a torso. That's when their decision became clear. Just thinking about this scene makes me cringe.

Writer Garth Ennis creates a terrific pace for this issue. This is like the exploratory phase of a police procedural show, albeit one that gets pretty graphic. You sympathize with Shaw and McGregor because they know they're right and this monster is going to walk if they don't do something.

From time to time we check back in with the agents in the warehouse. The only light in this space comes from their flashlights, creating an eerie two-tone quality, like it's forcing them to look at their recent past in black-and-white. It's like their judgment day.

A Walk Through Hell is like the horrifying cousin of Law & Order. Agents Shaw and McGregor crossed a line, but do they deserve to be put through this maddening gauntlet? Will they make it out alive? If they do, will they still have their sanity? These are the questions that make this book a gripping read.
