Review:

What do you get when you combine a genetically created invisible raptor gone bad, a washed-up paleontologist, and a lone security guard attempting to stop a homicidal predator before it's too late, all sprinkled with a coating of excellent humor? You are in for a spectacular trip.

When it comes to the brilliant mind of filmmaker Mike Hermosa, he was clearly thinking about creating a frightening experience that would appeal to both horror and comedy audiences. The Invisible Raptor exploits the principles of a creature feature and classic horror to its advantage, but unlike Jaws, Jurassic Park, Predator and classic films like The Invisible Man, no antagonists join the picture until the conclusion.

This works exceptionally well in death scenes that are intended to startle and surprise you before the gore strikes. The practical gore in The Invisible Raptor is wonderfully done, with each scene taking its time to reflect on the handywork, inventiveness and artistry of the death scene. The comedy does not detract from the horror or gore in any way, as it is strategically put at the finest parts of the film, to the point where you don't even realize you're seeing a horror film, which is excellent writing. There are a few occasions when the comedy feels a little off-kilter, but it doesn't make the picture lose a beat or detract from the viewer's attention.

Overall, The Invisible Raptor is a treasure of a film that is gorgeous to look at from a cinematic and practical gore standpoint. Hermosa takes notes from industry greats like Speilberg when it comes to soundtrack and sound design to truly craft a worthy experience for horror and cinematic geeks who truly appreciate a good film but don’t take themselves too seriously.
